NetFlix Movie: Don’t Look Up

Don’t Look Up is a 2.5-hour long movie and states “based on truly possible events.” I believe that it’s a true statement about this movie. If you don’t want any to read any spoilers, please don’t read any further because this will be full of them as I explain everything that happened.

It starts with Kate Dibiasky finding a comet that’s hurtling towards Earth at a remarkable speed while doing research. She tells Dr. Randall Mindy about her discovery, and they both quickly realize this is an Earth-destroying problem. 6 months left to live.

Dr. Randall Mindy tells his astronomer friends, and they quickly get a meeting with the President of the United States, President Orlean. They wait for 7 hours to talk to the President and are completely blown off and return the next day.

During the meeting, they are laughed at and made fun of. The President’s reaction to this comet destroying the entire Earth? Sit tight and assess. She has mid-terms that she’s worried about, all of her other Presidential duties and appearances that she must uphold. A comet destroying the Earth isn’t a priority.

Our dynamic duo then decides to leak the news to the media. They go on a top-rated show called The Daily Rip. The American people label Kate Dibiasky as crazy, and memes are made about her, while Dr. Randall Mindy is a star on the show.

Now the President cares about the end of the world.

She agrees that they need to do everything possible to stop this comet from killing all of humanity. All the top scientists, astronomers, and cabinet members are on the job.

They launch several nukes at the comet to destroy it and bring it as safely down to Earth as possible. A plan that causes the least amount of destruction, and most importantly, doesn’t destroy all of humankind. They’ve even got a situation room!

Cue the man who has way too much money and power. He doesn’t care if the world suddenly ceases to exist; he’s thinking of the $140 trillion that the comet is worth! He tells the President to turn those nukes around and that his robots will break the comet apart, and when they land, they will mine them for everything their worth.

When the comet enters the atmosphere, the President holds press conferences, and “Don’t Look Up” is chanted repeatedly. All the people that believe what they’re told follow blindly when all the information they need is right in front of them.

America has one chance to save the world, will they do it? The whole world is watching, so no pressure there. Bash Cellular’s CEO and the President think that they will, and they’ll create thousands of jobs while they’re at it. The robots get to the comet and that’s when things start going from bad to worse. We’re officially doomed.

If you’re thinking that they save the planet like I did, you’d be wrong. There’s no happy ending in this movie. I’m actually glad they did this, if I’m being honest.

They’ve got their cryopods that will save them though as that’s what the rich and powerful care about. Savings themselves.

40 years later they return to Earth, only to be eaten by dinosaur like animals.
